Ensure that the walls are smooth, clean, dry, and free from mold, mildew, grease, or any other stains. For new walls, tape, mud, and sand the drywall joints to create a smooth surface. Eliminate any nail heads, nicks, gouges, or other imperfections. Remove any old wallcoverings and residual adhesive; repair as necessary.
The wall's residual moisture content should be less than 4%. Follow the primer recommendations provided earlier. These guidelines are based on installation over gypsum drywall (sheetrock). Allow sufficient drying time before applying paste and wallpaper.
Allow the wallpaper and paste to acclimate in a clean, dry, and protected environment with temperatures between 65° F to 75° F and relative humidity at 45% until the materials adapt to the surroundings. Spoonflower wallpapers are packaged with the bottom of the pattern on the outside of the roll, so unroll each roll to locate the top of the pattern.
Before installation, inspect all materials for the following: correct print scale and panel sizes, acceptable color matching, defect-free print surfaces, and adequate edge space for overlap and trimming (1/2” overlap). Avoid creasing the material prior to or during installation, as these creases may be permanent. If you notice any issues, please contact us.
Paste the Wall
For optimal installation, maintain conditions between 65° F to 75° F and 45% relative humidity. Higher temperatures and humidity levels may affect installation.
Apply paste directly to the wall using a paint roller, and use a brush for corners, near ceilings, baseboards, and around windows and doors. Ensure you apply enough paste to cover at least 2” beyond the width of the panel (consider applying enough paste for two panels at a time).
Note: If preferred, the installer can paste the back of the paper using a roller or pasting machine instead. Allow it to book for five minutes before proceeding with installation.
Install the Wallpaper
Find the printed barcode, which indicates the bottom of the pattern, and identify the top of the pattern before starting.
For the paste-the-wall method, install the dry panels directly onto the pasted wall. Begin at the top of the panel and smooth the paper down to the wall with a plastic smoother, working out any bubbles while avoiding creases. It’s best to work vertically to prevent squeezing the paste onto the paper's face. Immediately wipe away any excess paste with a clean, lukewarm sponge, as it becomes challenging to remove once it starts to dry.
Overlap panels as necessary to match the pattern and use the double-cutting method for trimming. The intended overlap before trimming is 1/2”. Since the paper can be somewhat slick, hold the straight edge firmly while cutting.
Gently roll the seams with a seam roller as needed, avoiding excessive pressure to prevent squeezing out the paste. Trim any excess paper from the top, bottom, and sides of the walls, as well as around windows or doors.
Proper wall preparation is crucial for successful wallpaper removal. There are two methods for removal: the first and recommended is the Dry Strippable method. If you find that the wallpaper isn’t coming off the wall cleanly with this method, refer to the Wet Removal step.
LRC Textiles Gold Metallic and Silver Metallic Wallpapers are non-PVC specialty options designed for diverse room applications. Their non-woven construction ensures that the wallpaper won’t shrink or expand, making them ideal for paste-the-wall installations. These wallpapers offer various acceptable installation methods, including paste the wall, paste the paper, or the use of a pasting machine. Among these, the paste-the-wall technique is the preferred method, and it is explained in detail below.
