Primer: Use Roman PRO-977 Ultra Primer, tinted to match the base color of the printed wallpaper. Apply two coats, allowing each to dry overnight. Note: If using Roman adhesive products on an existing wall, first seal it with one coat of Roman PRO-999 (Rx-35) Primer for Porous Surfaces and let it dry overnight.
Paste:
Note: It is vital to work clean, as removing paste from the face of Grasscloth wallpaper can be quite challenging. Avoid any contact with the printed surface.
Other Supplies:
Allow the wallpaper and adhesive to acclimate in a clean, dry space with temperatures between 50° F to 77° F (10° C to 25° C) and relative humidity of 50–60% RH until they adjust to the surrounding environment. Inspect all materials before installation for the following: correct print scale and panel sizes, acceptable color matching, defect-free print surfaces, and sufficient edge space for overlapping and trimming. Because sisal is a natural material, expect some variations in color and texture from roll to roll.
Ensure that walls are smooth, clean, dry, and free from mold, mildew, grease, or stains. For new walls, tape, mud, and sand drywall joints to create a smooth finish. Remove any protruding nail heads, nicks, gouges, and other imperfections. Old wallcoverings and any residual adhesive must be completely removed, with the wall’s moisture content remaining below 4%.
Adhere to the primer recommendations mentioned in the "Supplies" section, allowing adequate drying time before applying paste and wallpaper. Using a tinted primer that matches the base color of the printed wallpaper is advisable to help mask any minor imperfections post-installation.
Paste the Wallpaper or Paste the Wall
The ideal installation conditions are between 50° F to 77° F (10° C to 25° C) with 50–60% RH. Prepare the area to be covered with the wallpaper and double-check that the pattern and colors are correct. If trimming at the table, do so before pasting.
Depending on personal preference and experience, the adhesive may be applied to the back of the wallpaper or directly onto the wall. Use approximately 7 ounces of paste per square yard (200 grams per meter) to avoid tearing, as excessive paste can be detrimental.

Install the Wallpaper
Use a smooth brush to gently smooth out any air pockets or bubbles during installation. Be cautious with hard-edged smoothers and seam rollers, as they can crush the natural fibers; they can still be used if handled carefully. Maintain a clean workspace to prevent adhesive from contacting the face of the printed Grasscloth, as it is extremely difficult to remove. Align and install panels to match the design as needed; halt the installation for any color-matching concerns and consult Spoonflower.
If using the double-cutting method, apply a temporary protective cover over the bottom panel using a hand-masker or 2” painter’s tape before overlapping the top panel. Execute the double cutting and then gently remove the protective tape, smoothing the top panel from the center outward.
When aligning seams at outside corners, avoid direct alignment to prevent peeling over time; instead, use appropriate tools to bend the panel around the corners. Minimize excessive wiping or overworking the material during installation.
LRC Textiles Grasscloth Wallpaper is a Type I, PVC-free specialty wall covering made from 100% handcrafted natural sisal with a non-woven backing. As sisal is a natural material, it exhibits unique variations and irregularities in texture, color, and weave, which are characteristic features of this product. Consequently, colors and textures may differ between sample orders and across rolls. Due to these attributes, the seams between the panels will be visible once installed.
With its subtle, elegant luster, this grasscloth is best suited for low-traffic areas that have sufficient window coverings. It is not recommended for high-moisture or humid environments, such as bathrooms with showers or bathtubs. Additionally, grasscloth can absorb odors from its surroundings and may fade when exposed to direct sunlight.
